The FDA maintains a public list of approved peptide drug products — the authoritative starting point for any “what is approved” question.
Approved status always attaches to a specific product, indication, route and formulation. It does not transfer to research-grade vials of the same molecule, a distinction gray-market marketing deliberately blurs.
From Research Material to Investigational Drug
The regulatory boundary is sharp: the moment a peptide is intended to enter humans, it becomes an investigational drug, requiring an IND application, GMP-manufactured material, and ethics-board oversight. Research-grade material — however pure — is not GMP material; the difference is documented process validation, not analytical numbers alone.
Preclinical packages for peptide programs typically cover pharmacology, toxicology, immunogenicity risk and degradation pathways. Long sequences and conjugates add immunogenicity questions that small molecules never face.
